French gendarmes are searching the house of the father of the man who confessed to attacks that killed 93 people in Norway. About a dozen gendarmes are surrounding the house in Cournanel in southern France on Monday, entering and leaving at irregular intervals.

The house is cordoned off, and reporters do not have access. The regional gendarme service confirmed the house was that of Anders Behring Breivik' s father but would not comment on the search operation.

News reports have said Breivik' s father, Jens Breivik, has not been in touch with his son in many years. Breivik, 32, has confessed he was behind Friday' s bombing in downtown Oslo and shooting massacre at a youth camp outside the capital, but denies criminal responsibility.

On the path from farm- to- fork, there are many ways that foods can pick up nasty germs like the bug sickening more than 1, 600 people across Europe. But there are steps consumers can take to avoid getting infected. Health officials haven' t pinpointed the source of the food poisoning outbreak that has hit the hardest, but they' re focusing on lettuce, tomatoes and cucumbers.

E. coli lives in the guts of people and animals and ends up in fecal matter. Those germs can end up in the water that irrigates fields or is used to wash just- picked crops. Or it winds up on the equipment used to harvest and pack up produce, said Jeffrey T. Le.

Other sources are animal waste used as fertilizer or from wildlife in the fields. And people are also a major source of contamination, said Le.

Jeune, a veterinarian who has studied E. coli. " And not just the chef at the greasy spoon who doesn' t wash his hands, " said Le. Jeune. " It can happen anywhere along the chain. " Many large farms avoid using manure because of the risk, he said. Manure is typically treated and dried before it is applied to a field, but " there' s nobody standing over a farmer' s shoulder all the time. " Organic farmers tend to use more manure and natural fertilizers than non- organic producers. Hilde Kruse, a food safety expert at the , said organic food producers were under the same obligations as any other farmers to ensure their practices meet proper hygiene standards. " It' s very difficult to guarantee that compost is sterile and if you can' t do that, you are essentially spreading contaminated feces on food intended for human consumption" said Dr.

Michael Osterholm, director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota. The European outbreak, which involves a super- toxic E. coli bug, was initially linked to organic cucumbers from , but tests didn' t back that up.

Based on what patients said they ate before getting sick, health investigators are still focused on cucumbers, tomatoes and lettuce.

Greens like lettuce and spinach make it easy for bacteria to hide within leafy folds.

Le. Jeune says washing fruits and vegetables helps remove E. coli but " you' re not going to get rid of it all. " He suggests removing " hot spots" — damaged or dead parts like the brown edges on lettuce. Other advice: Wash your hands before preparing or eating food — especially after using the bathroom or changing a diaper; keep raw meat separate from other foods; and thoroughly cook food. He also recommends just making better food choices — skipping things like an undercooked hamburger or unpasteurized apple juice to avoid getting sick.

The old adage, borne out of unflinching observation and repeated experience, is that the most dangerous thing in any kitchen is a dull knife.

Think about extra pressure, the leverage against a stubborn piece of raw chicken or gristly steak being prepped for the grill, or even a simple raw tomato. The blade doesn' t slice smoothly, so that added pressure is exerted, the blade slips sideways and down, onto the cutter' s finger. It happens every day. The answer, as is usual in these matters, is sublimely simple, cuttingly complex: A sharp knife.

But all knives arrive in a kitchen with a factory fresh edge, so where can it go wrong, and where can it go right? It begins with self empowerment; in this case, with going to a store and asking to handle, or even test, the knives they want to sell. The actual cutting of veggies or meat is usually the domain of more specialized boutiques, and therein lies the rub. Price. It is, under almost all circumstances, best to buy two, or perhaps three, knives, rather than a whole bushel of them, which usually come arranged in a somewhat attractive wooden block.

A nice, but impractical, gift. But a paring knife, 2- 3 inch blade, a standard blade of 6 inches or so and a big bad boy of 8- 10 inches will absolutely be all you need. The best of the best will cost upwards of $ 100 for each knife, so be aware of your needs. Chopping vegetables, even dicing such items as garlic or parsley ( often both, for many dishes) requires that medium blade. Brand name is not exclusively reliable, though, like tires or batteries, it is usually hard to really go wrong with a reputable brand. Wusthof, Henckels, and even the notably less pricey Victorinox, are fine, as are names such as MAC and Global.
