East Carolina 27, Tulsa 24 TULSA, Okla. ( AP) - Patrick Pinkney had one last chance to hold up the family tradition and bring a conference championship back to East Carolina. So he won this one for Dad.

Pinkney played mistake- free football, Ben Hartman kicked a 36- yard field goal with 1: 43 remaining and East Carolina took advantage of seven turnovers to beat Tulsa 27- 24 Saturday in the Conference USA championship game for its first league title in 32 years. ` ` He always joked about it, being the last team to win the conference championship, ' ' said Pinkney, whose father, Reggie, was a star defensive back on the Pirates' 1976 Southern Conference title team. ` ` I told him at the beginning of the year, ` We' ll go get it this year. ' ' ' While the Pirates ( 9- 4) used the league' s best defense to force David Johnson, the nation' s top- rated passer, into a career- high five interceptions, Pinkney was solid throughout. The senior threw for only 122 yards and one touchdown, but protected the ball all game long and routinely threw it away when there was nothing there. That put East Carolina in position for a final 12- play, 63- yard drive that chewed up 7 minutes and set up Hartman for the game- winner. ` ` We finished the game, ' ' Pinkney said. ` ` We got that drive, Ben hit that kick and that sealed it for us. ' ' The conference crown earned the Pirates a berth in the Liberty Bowl, which was offered to them on the field during the trophy presentation.

Tulsa ( 10- 3) will try to get its top- ranked offense back on track in time for its bowl game, most likely a second straight appearance in the GMAC Bowl - although coach Todd Graham said that wasn' t a done deal yet. The normally efficient Johnson had thrown only 13 interceptions in 12 games this season, but was off- target from the start. He threw an interception on the first play of the game as the Golden Hurricane came out going for the long ball.

It was a sign of things to come.

Pinkney responded by driving the Pirates 83 yards and throwing a 13- yard touchdown pass to fullback Kevin Gidrey off of play action. The lead grew to 14- 0 when Travis Simmons picked off another of Johnson' s passes and returned 72 yards it down the left sideline for a score. It was the first time all season that Johnson threw interceptions on consecutive drives. He also fumbled on Tulsa' s opening drive of the second half, and Norman Whitley bolted 69 yards up the middle for a touchdown that put East Carolina up 24- 17 - with all of its points coming off of Golden Hurricane turnovers. Van Eskridge sealed the win with 63 seconds left when he picked off a pass intended for top receiver Brennan Marion, who had crumpled to the turf after apparently injuring his right knee.

It was Eskridge' s second interception of the game. ` ` They got a lot of pressure on the quarterback, and we didn' t have a very good answer for the things that they were doing, ' ' Graham said. ` ` They were putting stress on us, and we were turning the football over. ' ' Tulsa, which leads the nation with a 579- yard average, was held to season- low 399 yards. Johnson finished with 195 yards on 23- for- 42 passing. It was only the third time this season he was held below 200 yards passing. His only touchdown pass was an 8- yarder to Jake Collums that tied the game at 24 with 8: 57 left, before East Carolina' s final march ` ` It' s definitely not all on Dave. We just fell short as a team, as an offense, ' ' said running back Tarrion Adams, who had a pair of 1- yard touchdown runs in a burst of 17 straight first- half points for Tulsa.

The Pirates won for the sixth time in seven games after a three- game losing streak wiped away the early BCS banter that followed their back- to- back upsets of Top 25 teams Virginia Tech and West Virginia. ` ` I thought this football team has had more heart, they have faced more adversity and they have hung together through some very difficult times when there' s not a lot of people that have believed in them, ' ' coach Skip Holtz said. ` ` There' s not a lot of people that gave them a chance in this football game. ' ' At the end of the day, though, Pinkney was able to follow in the footsteps of his father - who set a school record in that 1976 season with 197 return yards off of his six interceptions.

Holtz, too, followed the winning ways of his pop, former Notre Dame coach Lou Holtz. ` ` It' s big for our program. That' s a long time for a conference championship, ' ' Pinkney said, before Holtz interjected. ` ` Are you trying to say your dad is old? ' ' the coach asked. And once again, the quarterback had the perfect answer: ` ` He' s got gray hair. ' '

By Steve Keating. MONTREAL ( Reuters) - Formula One leader Sebastian Vettel bounced back from Friday' s crash to clock the fastest time in the final practice session for the Canadian Grand Prix on Saturday. The world champion, winner of five of the season' s first six races, got his weekend off to stuttering start when he smashed into the Wall of Champions during Friday' s first practice, causing heavy damage the right side of his Red Bull. But the 23- year- old German was quickly back setting the pace as he blitzed around the Gilles Villeneuve circuit in a course record of one minute 13.

381 seconds under grey skies with a forecast of showers for qualifying later in the day. Red Bull has dominated qualifying this season capturing all six poles, Vettel grabbing five and team mate Mark Webber one. Spanish double world champion Fernando Alonso, fastest in Friday' s afternoon practice, was second quickest with 1: 13. 701 offering hope that Ferrari, without a pole since Singapore last September, might be . . .

From December into May, whale- watching becomes one of the most popular activities on Maui. During the season, all outfitters offer whale- watching in addition to their regular activities, and most do an excellent job. Boats leave the wharves at Lahaina and Maalaea in search of humpbacks, allowing you to enjoy the awe- inspiring size of these creatures in closer proximity. As it' s almost impossible not to see whales in winter on Maui, you' ll want to prioritize: is adventure or comfort your aim?

If close encounters with the giants of the deep are your desire, pick a smaller boat that promises sightings. Those who think " green" usually prefer the smaller, quieter vessels that produce the least amount of negative impact to the whales' natural environment.

If an impromptu marine- biology lesson sounds fun, go with the Pacific Whale Foundation.

Two- hour forays into the whales' world are around $ 30. For those wanting to sip mai tais as whales cruise calmly by, stick with a sunset cruise on a boat with an open bar and pupu ( Hawaiian tapas, $ 40 and up) .

Afternoon trips are generally rougher because the wind picks up, but some say this is when the most surface action occurs.

Every captain aims to please during whale season, getting as close as legally possible ( 100 yards) .

Crew members know when a whale is about to dive ( after several waves of its heart- shaped tail) but rarely can predict breaches ( when the whale hurls itself up and almost entirely out of the water) . Prime- viewing space ( on the upper and lower decks, around the railings) is limited, so boats can feel crowded even when half full. If you don' t want to squeeze in beside strangers, opt for a smaller boat with fewer bookings. Don' t forget to bring sunscreen, sunglasses, a light long- sleeve cover- up, and a hat you can secure. Winter weather is less predictable and at times can be extreme, especially as the wind picks up.

Arrive early to find parking. From December 15 to May 1 the Pacific Whale Foundation has naturalists stationed in two places& # 8212; on the rooftop of their headquarters and at the scenic viewpoint at Papawai Point Lookout & nbsp; ( Rte. 30, 3 mi west of, Maalaea, Harbor, 96793) . Just like the commuting traffic, whales cruise along the pali, or cliff- side, of West Maui' s Honoapiilani Highway all day long.

Make sure to park safely before craning your neck out to see them. The northern end of Keawakapu Beach & nbsp; ( S. Kihei Rd. near Kilohana Dr. , 96753) seems to be a whale magnet. Situate yourself on the sand or at the nearby restaurant, and you' re bound to see a mama whale patiently teaching her calf the exact technique of flipper- waving.

Marine Charters & nbsp; . Three- hour cruises narrated by a naturalist are offered aboard Pride of Maui, a 65- foot power catamaran ( 149 passengers max) . There' s a main cabin, upper sundeck, and swim platform& # 8212; and you can listen to the whales sing. Trips start at $ 41. 95 per adult, and include pupu ( Hawaiian tapas) and an open bar.

Maalaea Harbor, Slip 70, 96793.

PHONE: 877/ 867- 7433 or 808/ 242- 0955. . Pacific Whale Foundation & nbsp; . This nonprofit organization pioneered whale- watching back in 1979 and now runs four boats, with 15 trips daily.

As the most recognizable name in whale- watching, the crew ( with a certified marine biologist on board) offers insights into whale behavior ( do they really know what those tail flicks mean? ) and suggests ways for you to help save marine life worldwide. The best part about these trips is the underwater hydrophone that allows you to actually listen to the whales sing.

Trips meet at the Foundation' s store, where you can buy whale paraphernalia, snacks, and coffee& # 8212; a real bonus for 8 am trips. Passengers are then herded much like migrating whales down to the harbor. These trips are more affordable than others, but you' ll be sharing the boat with about 100 people in stadium seating.

Once you catch sight of the wildlife up- close, however, you can' t help but be thrilled. M? ` alaea and Lahaina harbors, 96793. PHONE: 800/ 942- 5311 or 808/ 249- 8811. . Trilogy Excursions & nbsp; .

Trilogy whale- watching trips consist of smaller crowds of about 20 to 30 passengers, and include beverages and snacks, an onboard marine naturalist, and hydrophones ( microphones that detect underwater sound waves) . Trips are $ 39 plus tax. Book online for a discount. Loading at Kaanapali Beach Hotel, 96761.

Lesbian, gay and bisexual teens are five times more likely to attempt suicide than their heterosexual peers— but those living in a supportive community might be a little better off, according to a new study. The findings, published online today in Pediatrics, showed that lesbian, gay and bisexual ( LGB) teens living in counties with a high proportion of gay and lesbian couples, and those who went to schools with gay- straight alliances and anti- discrimination policies, were less likely to attempt suicide than LGB teens living in less accepting environments. The finding is " a call to action in providing a roadmap for how we can begin to reduce suicide in LGB youth, " Mark Hatzenbuehler, the study' s author from Columbia University in New York, told Reuters Health.

He said that while previous studies have shown that LGB teens are more likely to attempt suicide, those studies haven' t been able to determine why exactly that' s the case. Hatzenbuehler used data from 3 years of health surveys given to teens in Oregon. The data covered more than 30, 000 high school students across the state, all surveyed during 11th grade. Teens answered questions about depression, alcohol use, and relationships with their peers and family, as well as their sexuality. To evaluate teens' social environments, Hatzenbuehler gave each of the 34 counties where survey participants lived a score based on the proportion of same- sex couples living there, the county' s percentage of registered Democrats, and the proportion of schools in the area that had gay- straight alliances and anti- discrimination and anti- bullying policies.

About 1, 400— or between 4 and 5 percent— of teens surveyed identified themselves as being gay, lesbian, or bisexual.

Of those students, almost 22 kids out of every hundred said they had attempted suicide in the past year.

That compared to about 4 of every hundred teens who identified as straight and said they had attempted suicide. Suicide attempts were more common in LGB teens who reported being depressed and binge drinking, as well as those who had been victimized by their peers or physically abused by an adult. But even accounting for all those factors, teens' social environment made a difference too. Those who lived in counties that scored poorly on measures of social environment were about 20 percent more likely to have attempted suicide than teens from high- scoring social environments. " That challenges the myth that there' s something inherent to being gay that puts ( LGB teens) at risk for suicide attempts, " Hatzenbuehler said. The findings show that by making a few concrete changes to their policies, schools can improve the community for their LGB students and perhaps cut down on attempted suicides as well, Hatzenbuehler said.

Dr. Ritch Savin- Williams, a psychologist from Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, questioned the notion that LGB youth are more likely to attempt suicide at all, and said the issue is more controversial than this study suggests. He said that while LGB youth report suicide attempts more often than straight youth, their idea of a suicide attempt may be skewed. " We have given them the message that they are suicidal, " Savin- Williams, who wasn' t involved in the study, told Reuters Health. That' s not to say that life is easy for those teens, Savin- Williams said, and many of their thoughts of suicide might be attributed to LBG youth being victimized or hurt. And it also doesn' t mean schools shouldn' t be doing everything they can to protect those teens with anti- discrimination policies, he added. " Every kid has to be protected, every kid has to be safe, and it' s the school' s responsibility to do that, " Savin- Williams said.

But rather than highlight suicide risks, he said, " my approach would be: look what kind of abilities you' re squashing by not having protection of gay kids. I think that' s a real loss. " Recently, some high schools and districts have faced legal trouble surrounding bans on gay- straight alliances, including schools in Corpus Christi, Texas last month. " If schools want to take seriously reducing suicide attempts among LGB youth, several things they can do are allowing gay- straight alliances, implementing anti- discrimination policies and implementing anti- bulling policies, " Hatzenbuehler concluded. " We can reduce suicide attempts in LGB youth by improving the social environment. "

Entering the final countdown for one of the biggest days in any bride' s life can often bring the kind of stress that can take its toll, not to mention the biggest A- List wedding of the year - the marriage of to Marc Mezvinsky, which has the media swarming like ' bees to honey' for any bit of information or glimpse of wedding planning activity. While the reality show, Bridezillas , comes to mind as a caricature of the stress of marital planning, the truth is that the emotional stress for any bride during this period can cause her to binge on junk food, starve herself, not sleep, and reach a point of emotional exhaustion. This is also the kind of stress that can affect the clarity of skin and diminish the beauty of your smile. A host of dental problems can be avoided with some simple wedding ' wellness planning. ' So here' s some A- List Smile Smile Wellness Advice 1. Eliminate the junk and go natural : Besides the junk food temptations that many people have when under emotional stress, you need to eliminate harmful oral care products that have harsh detergents and alcohol ( mouthwashes) that disturb the oral environment and can actually cause more stress to your teeth and gums.

Most of the commercial care products have an array of harsh detergents and chemicals. Instead, go for the more gentle and natural alternatives for your mouth. I recommend , which was developed to restore and replenish like a ' spa treatment' for your mouth. It' s all natural and has been shown to whiten teeth and freshen breath while staying completely natural.

Remember the nutritional A- list : an Alkaline, Anti- inflammatory, and Antioxidant- rich diet: Stress can cause the body to turn acidic. A more raw food diet can counteract that. Rich, leafy green salads with plenty of fresh summer veggies are a great choice. Avoid inflammatory diet triggers that many people have such as wheat, dairy and gluten.

These can drag your energy level and immune system down. Stress can also cause the body to burn high amounts of key antioxidants that are necessary for proper cell function and defense. Reactive Oxidative Stress ( ROS) causes thousands of damaging free radicals to run amuck in the body.

Key antioxidants include vitamins C, E, A, Coenzyme- Q10, and B- complex. I recommend taking Quercitin which also provides alkalizing, anti- inflammatory and antioxidant support. Keep exercising : The frenzy of activity the week before your wedding can cause many brides to ' blow off' exercising when in fact regular aerobic activity is just what your body needs to stay healthy.

Besides the healthy release of endorphins in the brain, which promote well- being, physical fitnesshelps to stregthen the immune and circulatory systems, which translates to healthy gums and teeth. Take a morning run, a bike ride or swim each morning. An afternoon workout will help you sleep better at night. Stay centered : The most effective way to manage the damaging effects from stress - especially the fallout in the mouth such as grinding and clenching your teeth - is to take time to center yourself. Meditation, yoga and prayer all help to calm your mind, relax your body, and relieve emotional and physical stress.

In fact, these activities can lower your heart rate and blood pressure and cause you to be more focused. Clenching and grinding teeth can do damage to the tooth structure, as well as the temporomandibular joint ( TMJ) which can be painful and debilitating. While all the cosmetic dentistry, teeth whitening and dental cleaning should have been done prior to this time, by following these four cornerstones of oral health, you and your smile will be dazzling in wedding bliss on the big day! Dr. Gerry Curatola is a renowned aesthetic dentist and pioneer in the emerging field of rejuvenation dentistry, which improves patients' overall health and appearance by integrating total wellness with cutting edge oral care and restorative procedures.

In addition to his private practice, research, and work as a Clinical Associate Professor at NYU College of Dentistry, he is an internationally sought after speaker, author and expert who has been featured widely in print and broadcast media. MARANA, Ariz. & # 8211; & nbsp; is the talk of the Match Play Championship again. At least this year it' s about how he plays, not what he says. That doesn' t mean his prospects are any better.

Woods passes another mile marker this week on what appears to be a slow road back. The first was Thanksgiving, the one- year anniversary of when his life came crashing down around him. The next one will be at the Masters, where he finally returned to golf. It was a year ago at the Match Play Championship that Woods showed just how much golf revolves around him. " The day the world came to a standstill, " said with a grin. The opening round Wednesday was no more than three hours old when word came that Woods, who had been in seclusion since revelations of his extramarital affairs, would be speaking publicly for the first time from across the country at the TPC Sawgrass.

Just like that, the 32 winners that day didn' t matter. Players were ignored again two days later, when Woods gave a 13& # 189; - minute statement that was televised around the world. He spoke about two hours before third- round matches, and Dove Mountain was buzzing with media. They weren' t there for the golf. " I remember turning up to the golf course and there were 50 media guys around the clubhouse, waiting for us to go to the locker room, " Paul Casey said. " It was headphones in and hat on. Even if I did want to speak, I didn' t know what to say.

We were trying to absorb it as much as everyone. It was strange. I don' t know about the rest of the players. I watched it with curiosity. " Goosen avoided the media by going through a back entrance, and he wasn' t alone. " They were all standing there waiting for you to say something and blow it all out of proportion, " Goosen said. Eight players advanced to the quarterfinals that day, a forgotten achievement.

One of them was , who went 19 holes to beat Charl Schwartzel, then walked back toward the clubhouse to see a larger- than- usual group of reporters waiting for him. He was asked seven questions & mdash; all about Woods. " I wanted to talk about my match, " Cink said with a laugh. " I did get a couple of questions . . . from the media official. " didn' t even turn on the TV that morning. He didn' t want anything to distract from his match, and not watching meant he would have nothing to say. " It makes it pretty easy, " Poulter said that day.

They all know what Woods means to the game. They play for $ 8. 5 million in these World Golf Championships, a sum that wouldn' t exist except for Woods driving interest and TV ratings over the years. Those who spoke said all the right things, that Woods' apology sounded sincere and that they hoped he could get to back to golf soon. Indeed, Woods returned to the golf course two months later.

As for the player they remembered?

Well, they' re still waiting.

It has been 15 months and 17 tournaments since his last victory, the longest drought of his career. During a previous dry spell, his only win in 23 tournaments was the Match Play Championship.

Anything can happen this week. His behavior on the course is subject to interpretation. Woods is signing more autographs, though never as many as some believe he should. That' s a battle Woods can never win. He was fined by the European Tour two weeks ago for spitting on the green in Dubai, a gesture that was more of an outrage in Britain than America.

Despite being the highest- ranked American and a three- time winner of the Match Play Championship, he declined to go to the media center for his pre- tournament interview Tuesday, instead making TV crews and reporters set up on the back side of the clubhouse so he could get it out of the way before his practice round. For a guy trying to make amends, Woods still insists on calling the shots. Ultimately, though, it comes down to his golf. caused a stir last week when he said he was on the practice range with Woods and " it clicked. " Then again, Cook was gushing about Woods' swing when he came out of therapy last year. Woods toned down the excitement Tuesday by clarifying what Cook meant. " I got a better understanding of it, " Woods said. " I think that' s what John was saying. He was out there working with me and saw what I was working on with Sean ( Foley, his swing coach) . . . .

Now I just need to keep working on it and keep heading down this path. " He is the biggest name at Dove Mountain, but not the best player at the moment. The transgressions of the past are seldom mentioned except when he marks an anniversary he would rather forget. Most would agree that golf is better when he is playing well, although the game managed to survive. Martin Kaymer of Germany, who won the last year and can go to No.

1 in the world this week, is intriguing. has potential to be the next American star, along with Rickie Fowler. There are three teenagers in the field. " I did not think we' d be in this good of shape a year later, " said Ben Crane, who took on the brunt of media requests at Dove Mountain the day Woods spoke. " I think we' ve shared the media load with a lot of younger players. For the average golf fan, it' s a more interesting game.

For the non- golf fan, it' s not as interesting. " Tiger hasn' t played a lot, " Crane said. " And he hasn' t played as well. " It would help Woods to do a little of both before his next mile marker.

The debate is over now. Barcelona is on the list of soccer' s all- time greatest teams. Led by another dominant performance from Lionel Messi, the Catalan club beat Manchester United 3- 1 on Saturday to earn its third Champions League title in six seasons and No. 4 overall. " I feel privileged, " Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola said. " You always want to win, but the way we have won is what I am most proud of. This is the way we want to play football. " Lionel is the best player I have seen and probably the best I will ever see. " Messi put Barcelona ahead to stay with his 53rd goal and helped create another score to give the Spanish league champion some breathing room.

Barcelona dominated play at Wembley Stadium with its trademark one- touch passing, but it needed the Argentine striker to conjure a 54th- minute solo strike from the edge of the penalty area to take the lead for the second time. There seemed to be no space as Messi was tracked by fullback Patrice Evra. But the two- time world player of th. . .

Astros closer Mark Melancon couldn' t make it through a third inning unscathed. Astros closer Mark Melancon couldn' t make it through a third inning unscathed. Melancon, who cruised through his first two innings Sunday, was unable to handle a grounder toward first with one out in the 11th, and things got worse from there for Houston.

Pinch- runner Josh Harrison scored on a passed ball for the first of Pittsburgh' s three runs in the 11th and rookie Alex Presley drove in his third run of the game later in the inning to lead the Pirates to a 7- 5 win over the mistake- prone Astros.

Brandon Wood doubled to start the 11th and was replaced by Harrison. Xavier Paul reached on an error when Melancon ( 5- 3) couldn' t handle his dribbler that sent Harrison to third.

Melancon said he rushed the play and looked up to see where first baseman Carlos Lee was. " I make that routine play at first base, they have a guy on second with two outs, " Melancon said. " Looking back, it seems like three or four things went wrong. It seems like that sums up our season a little bit. It' s a game of inches, . . .
